About Column Tools

Column Tools is a free browser-based editor for restructuring spreadsheet columns. In Arrange mode you drag columns into a new order, rename headers inline and untick columns to drop them. Split mode breaks one column into several using a delimiter, and Merge mode joins multiple columns into a single new one with the separator you choose.

Splitting supports comma, semicolon, space, pipe or any custom delimiter — useful for separating "City, Country" fields or breaking apart tags. Merging lets you pick the columns, the join separator (space, comma, dash or none), the new column name and whether to keep the originals. Columns are joined in the order you tick them.

The tool accepts XLSX, XLS, CSV, TSV and ODS files and exports the edited sheet as Excel or CSV. All parsing and editing happens locally with an in-browser spreadsheet engine, so your file never leaves your device.

How to use Column Tools

  1. Upload a spreadsheet by drag-and-drop or with Choose file, or load the sample to experiment.
  2. Confirm the "First row is a header" switch matches your data.
  3. Choose an operation: Arrange to drag, rename and drop columns; Split to break one column apart by a delimiter; Merge to join several columns into one.
  4. Set the mode options — the delimiter for Split, or the columns, separator and new column name for Merge.
  5. Check the live result preview, pick Excel or CSV, and click Download.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. In Arrange mode every column shows an editable name and a checkbox — rename headers inline, drag to reorder, and untick any column to exclude it from the exported file.

Comma, semicolon, space and pipe are built in, and a custom field accepts any character or short string, such as a slash or a dash.

Only if you want it to. A "Keep original columns" switch controls whether the source columns remain alongside the new merged column in the output.

No. Reading, splitting, merging and exporting all run in your browser. The spreadsheet never reaches the server, so private data stays on your device.

No — Column Tools is free with no usage limit, because all processing is client-side.
