About Crossword Puzzle Maker
The Crossword Puzzle Maker builds a real interlocking crossword from your own material. Enter one word and clue per line and the grid assembles itself: the longest entries are laid down first, each new word is hooked onto a letter it shares with one already on the grid, and the result is cropped to the smallest rectangle that holds it.
The squares are then numbered exactly the way a printed crossword is numbered, top to bottom and left to right, and the Across and Down clue lists are read back from the finished grid rather than from the placement order. That is why the numbers on the sheet always match the clue lists, and why the answer key page shows precisely the letters that solve the puzzle.
Words that simply cannot be hooked onto the grid are reported to you instead of being dropped in silence, so you can reword them or add an entry that shares a letter. Nothing is uploaded: the puzzle is generated and drawn in your browser, and the PDF is written there too.
