High-volume tones can damage hearing and equipment. Keep it low.
About Tone Generator
The Tone Generator produces pure test tones at any frequency you choose, with four waveforms: sine, square, triangle and sawtooth. It is handy for testing speakers and headphones, checking the limits of your hearing, finding rattles and resonances, and providing a reference pitch for tuning.
Set the frequency by hand or jump to one of the quick presets, pick a waveform, and press Play. The display also shows the musical note closest to the current frequency. Everything is synthesized live in your browser with the Web Audio API — no audio files, no uploads, no credits.
One important caution, echoed in the tool itself: high-volume tones can damage hearing and equipment. Always start with the volume low — especially with headphones or when sweeping into very high or very low frequencies — and increase it gradually.
How to use Tone Generator
- Turn the volume down low before you start.
- Set a frequency in Hz, or pick one of the quick presets.
- Choose a waveform: sine, square, triangle or sawtooth.
- Press Play, then adjust the frequency and volume as needed; press Stop to end the tone.
