About Spreadsheet Cleaner

The Spreadsheet Cleaner takes a messy CSV, XLSX, XLS or TXT file and returns a tidy one: every cell is trimmed of stray spaces, fully empty rows are swept out and exact duplicate rows are removed. It is the fastest way to clean up an export before importing it somewhere else.

After you drop a file in, an inspection report shows what cleaning will do — how many data rows there are, how many are empty or duplicated, and how many cells need trimming — with the problem rows highlighted in a preview. A verdict line tells you exactly how many rows will survive.

You choose the output format (CSV or Excel) and whether the first row is a header; headers are kept as-is and never counted as duplicates. The file is uploaded for processing and cleaned up automatically afterwards, and the result page reports rows kept, empties swept, duplicates removed and cells trimmed.

How to use Spreadsheet Cleaner

  1. Drop your spreadsheet onto the page — CSV, XLSX, XLS or TXT up to the size limit.
  2. Review the inspection report: empty rows, duplicates and cells with stray spaces are highlighted.
  3. Choose the download format (CSV or Excel) and tell the tool whether the first row is a header.
  4. Click “Clean it up” and wait while the file is scrubbed.
  5. Download the cleaned file and check the summary of what was fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Three things only: leading and trailing whitespace is trimmed from every cell, rows where every cell is empty are removed, and rows that are exact duplicates of an earlier row are dropped. Column order and cell contents are otherwise untouched.

Yes — cleaning files is free, with no credits or sign-up involved.

If you mark the first row as a header, it is kept exactly as-is and excluded from deduplication, so a header that happens to match a data row is never removed. Mark it as data and it is treated like any other row.

Yes — trimming, sweeping and deduplication run server-side, which is also how Excel workbooks are read. Uploads are processed and then cleaned up automatically.

A row whose trimmed cells are all identical to an earlier row. The first occurrence is kept; later copies are removed. For fuzzier matching on specific columns, use the Remove Duplicate Rows tool instead.

Yes. For CSV and TXT files the inspection report highlights empty rows, duplicates and cells to trim before you click clean, and states how many rows will be kept. Excel files are inspected during the cleaning pass itself.
