About Image Color Extractor

The Image Color Extractor pulls a copy-ready color palette from any photo. Upload a JPG, PNG or WEBP file and the tool analyzes the image with a perceptual median-cut algorithm, grouping millions of pixels into a compact set of representative colors you can copy, export or reuse in a design straight away.

Instead of returning one flat list, the extractor derives five distinct moods from a single analysis — Colorful, Bright, Muted, Deep and Dark — so you can pick the interpretation that fits your project. A slider controls how many colors each mood shows, up to ten swatches per mood.

Every swatch copies with one click, and the whole palette exports as CSS variables, a JSON file or a PNG swatch sheet. It is a fast way to get colors from an image for a website theme, a presentation or a brand moodboard — no design software required.

How to use Image Color Extractor

  1. Upload a JPG, PNG or WEBP image by dragging it into the upload area or clicking to browse.
  2. Choose how many colors you want and click "Extract palette".
  3. Switch between the Colorful, Bright, Muted, Deep and Dark moods to compare interpretations.
  4. Click any swatch to copy its value, or use "Copy all" and "Copy CSS" for the whole palette.
  5. Download the palette as a PNG sheet or a JSON file if you want to keep it.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Extracting a color palette from an image is completely free — there is no charge, no watermark and no sign-up requirement.

The image is down-sampled and quantized with a median-cut algorithm into representative color clusters. Five mood-based selections (Colorful, Bright, Muted, Deep, Dark) are then scored from those clusters, similar to the mood themes in professional design tools.

No. The extraction is a deterministic color-quantization algorithm, not an AI model, so the same image always produces the same palette. If you want AI-named colors with brand roles, use the Image → Brand Kit tool instead.

All five come from the same analysis but favor different clusters: Colorful picks vivid, varied hues; Bright favors light, saturated tones; Muted prefers softer, desaturated colors; Deep leans on rich mid-dark tones; and Dark selects the darkest usable colors.

JPG, PNG and WEBP files are accepted, up to the size limit shown in the upload area. Large photos work fine — the tool samples the image at a reduced resolution, so extraction stays fast regardless of the original dimensions.

Click "Copy CSS" to get the palette as ready-to-paste CSS custom properties. You can also download a JSON file for design tools or scripts, or grab individual HEX values by clicking each swatch.
