About Wall Framing Estimator

The wall framing estimator counts the timber for a stud wall: studs, top and bottom plates, and rows of blocking or noggins. Enter the wall length and height, pick the stud spacing, choose single or double top plates, and tell it how many openings, corners, and blocking rows the wall has.

The stud count starts with the spacing layout — wall length divided by stud spacing, plus the end stud — then adds one extra stud per opening and two per corner or intersection, matching the extra framing that doors, windows, and junctions actually consume. A wastage percentage covers offcuts and culls, and the plate and blocking lengths are computed from the wall geometry.

The output is the number of studs, the total plate length, the blocking length, and the total lineal timber to order — the number your lumber supplier wants. It is a free in-browser estimate for partitions, garages, and framing takeoffs; verify the count against your actual framing layout before ordering.

How to use Wall Framing Estimator

Frequently asked questions

Divide the wall length by the stud spacing, round up, and add one for the end — a 6 m wall at 400 mm centers needs 16 layout studs. The estimator then adds one stud per opening and two per corner before applying wastage.

400 mm (16 in) centers are standard for load-bearing walls and anything carrying board edges; 600 mm (24 in) centers work for many non-load-bearing partitions and save timber. Board widths are made to land on both spacings.

Double top plates are conventional on load-bearing walls — they tie intersecting walls together and spread loads from joists or trusses that do not land over a stud. Simple non-structural partitions often manage with a single top plate.

Horizontal blocking rows stiffen studs against twisting, provide fire-stopping in some assemblies, and give fixing points for cabinets and board edges. Each row adds roughly the wall length in timber, which the estimator includes.

It is a close takeoff, but openings also need headers, sills, and cripple studs sized by the structure, and corner details vary. Add those from your framing layout, and treat code requirements for load-bearing walls as governing.
