About Sun Path & Shadows

The sun path calculator shows where the sun is in the sky for any place, date, and time on Earth. Enter coordinates — or let the browser use your location — and it computes the solar altitude and azimuth, sunrise, solar noon, and sunset times, and draws the full sun-path chart for that day.

Give it an object height and it also estimates the shadow length, which is the practical question behind most solar studies: will the neighbor’s building shade the garden in December, how far does a tree’s shadow reach at 3 p.m., where should the terrace go? Azimuths are reported with compass directions, and times are shown in a zone estimated from the longitude.

Architects use it for site analysis and window orientation, photographers for planning golden-hour shots, and solar installers for a first shading check. The astronomy is pure solar geometry computed in your browser, free — terrain, obstructions, and weather are not taken into account, and polar day or night is flagged when it occurs.

Frequently asked questions

Altitude is the sun’s angle above the horizon, from 0° at sunrise to its daily maximum at solar noon. Azimuth is the compass direction of the sun, measured clockwise from north — the tool labels it with the usual N, SE, WSW directions.

From simple trigonometry: shadow length = object height ÷ tan(altitude). A 10 m building with the sun 30° above the horizon casts a shadow about 17.3 m long. When the sun is below the horizon there is no shadow to compute.

The moment the sun crosses the local meridian and reaches its highest altitude of the day. It rarely matches 12:00 clock time, because time zones are wide and clock time also shifts with daylight saving.

Times are shown in a zone estimated from the longitude, which can differ from your official civil time zone, especially near zone borders or under daylight saving. The solar geometry itself is unaffected.

The solar position is pure astronomical geometry and is accurate to a fraction of a degree — plenty for shading studies and photo planning. It ignores terrain, buildings, atmospheric refraction details, and weather, so treat on-site shading conclusions accordingly.
