About Fuel Cost Calculator

The Fuel Cost Calculator estimates what a trip will cost in fuel. Enter the distance, your vehicle’s fuel consumption and the local fuel price, and it returns the total cost, the liters or gallons needed, and the cost per kilometer or mile. Options add a return leg and split the cost between passengers.

In metric mode, fuel needed is distance × consumption ÷ 100 using L/100km; in imperial mode it is distance ÷ MPG. Multiplying by the price per liter or gallon gives the cost. Enabling round trip doubles the distance before any per-person split is applied.

How to use Fuel Cost Calculator

  1. Choose your unit system — metric (km, L/100km) or imperial (miles, MPG).
  2. Enter the trip distance one way.
  3. Enter your vehicle’s fuel consumption or economy, and the fuel price per liter or gallon.
  4. Tick “Round trip” for there-and-back, and set how many people share the cost.
  5. Read the total fuel cost, fuel needed, cost per person and cost per km or mile.

Frequently asked questions

Fuel needed × price. In metric that is distance × (L/100km ÷ 100) liters; in imperial it is distance ÷ MPG gallons. A 300 km trip at 7 L/100km uses 21 liters — multiply by your pump price.

L/100km measures fuel used per distance (lower is better); MPG measures distance per fuel (higher is better). They are reciprocal ideas: 7.8 L/100km is roughly 30 US MPG.

The trip computer gives a running average, or fill the tank, drive, refill and divide fuel added by distance covered. Real-world figures typically run 10–20% above the official rating.

The total trip cost — doubled first if round trip is on — is divided by the number of people. Each passenger’s share appears as “cost per person”, making carpool math transparent.

No, it covers fuel only. For a full cost per mile, add tolls, parking and a per-distance allowance for maintenance and depreciation on top of the fuel figure.
