The Bill Split Calculator divides a restaurant or group bill fairly. Enter the pre-tax subtotal, the tax, a tip percentage and the number of people, and it shows the grand total plus exactly how much each person owes, including each person’s share of the tip.

Frequently asked questions

Before tax. The tip percentage is applied to the pre-tax subtotal, which is the customary way to tip. Tax and tip are then both added to the subtotal to form the grand total.

In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is typical for table service, with 18–20% common for good service. Customs differ elsewhere — in many countries a service charge is already included.

The grand total — subtotal plus tax plus tip — is divided by the number of people. The tool also breaks out the tip per person, so you can see how the gratuity portion splits.

This calculator splits evenly by design. For uneven splits, a practical trick is to run it once per subgroup with their portion of the subtotal, or turn off even splitting and divide the grand total manually.

Set either field to zero and it drops out of the math. The tool then simply divides the subtotal (plus whichever charge remains) evenly among the party.
