About Monitor Refresh Rate Test

The Monitor Refresh Rate Test measures how many frames per second your display actually shows, in hertz. It samples the browser’s animation-frame timestamps continuously and reports the current reading alongside the running average, minimum and maximum, plus the equivalent frame time in milliseconds and a live sample count — enough to see whether your 120 Hz or 144 Hz monitor is really running at its rated speed.

A smoothness demo runs below the numbers: a bar that travels one screen width per second. At your display’s true refresh rate it should glide evenly; visible stutter or juddering suggests dropped frames from background load, power saving or a mismatched OS setting.

The most common surprise this test reveals is a high-refresh monitor quietly running at 60 Hz because the operating system’s display settings, a cable limitation or a battery-saver mode capped it. Keep the tab focused and in the foreground while measuring — browsers deliberately slow animation frames in background tabs, which lowers the reading.

How to use Monitor Refresh Rate Test

  1. Open the page and keep the tab focused — measurement starts automatically.
  2. Let the sample count build for a few seconds, then read the current, average, minimum and maximum Hz.
  3. Compare the average with your monitor’s rated refresh rate.
  4. Watch the moving bar: it should glide smoothly at your display’s refresh rate.
  5. Use Pause, Resume and Restart to control the run — for example after changing your OS display settings.

Frequently asked questions

The operating system is likely driving the display at 60 Hz. Check your OS display settings and raise the refresh rate, and verify your cable and port support the higher mode — older HDMI cables in particular can cap high resolutions at 60 Hz.

Very close in normal conditions, because animation frames are synchronized to the display. Expect readings within a fraction of a hertz of the true rate — 59.9 for a 60 Hz panel is normal. Background load or power saving can pull the number down temporarily.

Frame time is the interval between frames in milliseconds — the inverse of the refresh rate. 60 Hz corresponds to about 16.7 ms, 120 Hz to 8.3 ms, 144 Hz to 6.9 ms. Lower frame time means smoother motion and lower input latency.

Browsers throttle animation frames in background tabs to save resources, and battery-saver modes can halve the effective rate. Both are expected. Keep the tab focused, in the foreground and the device plugged in for the most accurate measurement.
