About Video File Size Calculator

The video file size calculator estimates how large a video file will be from its bitrate and duration. Pick a resolution, frame rate and codec preset — from 480p H.264 to 8K AV1 or ProRes 422 — to get a realistic suggested bitrate, or type your own video and audio bitrates, set the duration, and the estimated file size updates live.

File size follows directly from bitrate: size = (video bitrate + audio bitrate) × duration ÷ 8. The tool breaks the result into video data, audio data, size per minute and size per hour, and a reference table shows how big your clip would be at every common bitrate from SD streaming up to 8K.

The reverse mode answers the other everyday question: what bitrate should I encode at to hit a target file size? Frequently asked questions

Multiply the total bitrate by the duration and divide by 8 to convert bits to bytes. A 10-minute clip at 8,000 kbps video plus 192 kbps audio is (8,192 kbps × 600 s) ÷ 8 ≈ 614 MB.

For H.264, roughly 6–10 Mbps suits 1080p at 30 fps and 25–45 Mbps suits 4K; add about 50% for 60 fps. Modern codecs need less — H.265 about 40% less and AV1 about half — which is exactly what the preset suggestions reflect.

Encoders in variable-bitrate mode spend more bits on complex, fast-moving scenes and fewer on static ones, and the container adds a small overhead. The estimate is accurate for constant-bitrate encodes and a good ballpark for variable-bitrate ones.
