How to read the bands

Hold the tolerance band (gold or silver) to the right and read left to right. The number of bands tells you how many significant figures to read.

Preferred values (E-series)

Standard resistor values are spaced so their tolerance bands just touch. Multiply any value by a power of ten to get real-world parts (e.g. 47 → 4.7 Ω, 470 Ω, 4.7 kΩ…).

E12 & E24

The 24 base values of the E24 series (±5%). The 12 highlighted values also make up the E12 series (±10%).

Values follow IEC 60062. Tolerance and temperature-coefficient bands are only present on higher-precision resistors; an unmarked color means that band role does not apply to that color.

This chart puts the entire resistor color code on one page: all twelve band colors — black through white plus gold and silver — with the significant digit, multiplier, tolerance and temperature coefficient each color encodes. Frequently asked questions

The first two bands are significant digits, the third is the multiplier and the fourth is the tolerance. For example, yellow-violet-red-gold reads 4 and 7 times 100, giving 4.7 kΩ at ±5%.

A 5-band resistor adds a third significant digit before the multiplier, giving higher precision. A 6-band part adds a final band for the temperature coefficient in ppm/K, showing how much the resistance drifts with temperature.

They never encode digits. As multipliers they mean ×0.1 (gold) and ×0.01 (silver) for sub-10 Ω values, and as tolerance bands they mean ±5% and ±10% respectively.

They are the standard preferred value sets: E12 has twelve values per decade (10, 12, 15 … 82) for ±10% parts, and E24 has twenty-four for ±5% parts. The chart highlights the E12 members inside the E24 list.
