About GPA Calculator

The GPA Calculator computes your weighted grade point average on the standard 4.0 scale. Add each course with its letter grade and credit hours; the tool converts grades to points, weights them by credits and shows your GPA plus total credits and total grade points.

The formula is the one registrars use: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits). An A is worth 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, and so on down the scale, so a 4-credit A pulls your average harder than a 1-credit A. Rows without credits are simply ignored.

Frequently asked questions

Each grade converts to points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0…), multiplied by the course’s credits to get grade points. GPA is total grade points divided by total credits — a credit-weighted average.

An A− is 3.7 on the standard scale, so straight A− grades give a 3.7 GPA. Plus/minus steps are typically 0.3: B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, B− is 2.7, and so on.

They weight each course by its size. A B in a 5-credit course moves your GPA far more than a B in a 1-credit seminar, because the grade points are multiplied by the credits before averaging.

A 3.0 (B average) is a common baseline for many programs; 3.5+ signals strong performance, and honors distinctions often start around 3.5 to 3.7. Requirements vary by institution and field.
