About Ideal Weight Calculator

The Ideal Weight Calculator estimates a reference body weight from your height and sex using four established formulas: Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi. The Devine result is the headline figure, with the other three shown alongside, plus the healthy weight range corresponding to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.

All four formulas share a structure — a base weight at 5 feet plus an increment per extra inch. Devine (1974), the most widely cited, uses 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft for men and 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch for women; Robinson, Miller and Hamwi vary the base and increment slightly.

These formulas were originally created for calculating drug dosages, and today they serve as rough targets for weight planning. Because they consider only height and sex, compare the spread of results with the BMI range rather than fixating on one number. Metric and imperial supported, free in your browser.

  2. Select your sex.
  3. Enter your height in centimeters or feet and inches.

Frequently asked questions

Ideal weight = 50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) + 2.3 kg per inch of height above 5 feet. Published in 1974 for drug dosing, it remains the most commonly referenced ideal body weight formula.

Robinson, Miller and Hamwi each tweak the base weight and per-inch increment from different population data, so results typically spread across a few kilograms. Treat the cluster as a range, not the differences as errors.

The weights that put your height between BMI 18.5 and 24.9 — the adult “normal weight” band. It is usually wider than the formula estimates and is a more forgiving reference for most people.

No — they use only height and sex. Muscular or large-framed people can be perfectly healthy above the formula weight, and body composition matters more than any single target number.

These are general guides, not medical advice. A healthy weight for you depends on body composition, age and health history — discuss realistic targets with a healthcare professional rather than chasing one formula figure.
