About Currency Codes (ISO 4217)

The Currency Codes reference lists every active world currency by its ISO 4217 code — the three-letter identifier (USD, EUR, JPY) used in payments, banking APIs, invoices and exchange-rate feeds. Each row shows the code in large copyable monospace, the currency symbol, its English name, the ISO 4217 numeric code and the number of decimal digits the currency uses.

Every currency also lists the countries that use it, shown as flag emojis with a count, so you can see at a glance that the euro spans many countries while the yen belongs to one. Search matches codes, names and symbols alike — GBP, yen and ¥ all work — and each row has a stable anchor so you can deep-link straight to a currency.

The decimal-digits column matters more than it looks: most currencies use two minor units, but the Japanese yen uses zero and a few use three. Payment APIs that take amounts in minor units will silently miscalculate if you assume two everywhere, and this table gives you the correct exponent per currency.

How to use Currency Codes (ISO 4217)

  1. Type a currency code, name or symbol into the search box — for example USD, Euro or ¥.
  2. Read the row for the ISO code, symbol, numeric code, decimal digits and the countries that use the currency.
  3. Click the copy button to grab the three-letter code for your API call or spreadsheet.
  4. Use the row anchor (for example #USD) to bookmark or share a direct link to that currency.

Frequently asked questions

It is the international standard identifier for a currency: a three-letter code such as USD or EUR plus a three-digit numeric code. The first two letters usually come from the country’s ISO 3166 code and the third from the currency name.

Because currencies differ in their minor units. Most use two decimals, the Japanese yen uses zero and some use three. Payment systems that express amounts in minor units need this exponent to convert values correctly.

ISO 4217 assigns each currency a three-digit number alongside its letters — 840 for USD, 978 for EUR. Numeric codes are used in systems where alphabetic fields are impractical, such as some banking and card-network formats.

Yes. Every row carries a stable anchor based on its code, so a URL ending in #EUR opens the page scrolled to the euro. Other tools on this site use the same anchors for their cross-links.

Yes. The full ISO 4217 directory is free to search, browse and copy from, with no sign-up. The table renders in your browser and nothing you type is sent to the server.
