The Braille Translator & Reference converts any text you type into Unicode Braille as you watch, using Grade 1 (uncontracted) Braille — every letter, digit and punctuation mark maps to exactly one cell, letter for letter. The output is made of real Unicode Braille characters, so you can copy it and paste it anywhere Unicode works.

Below the translator sits a searchable reference of every supported cell. Each entry shows the character, its Braille glyph and its raised-dot pattern using the standard numbering — dots 1 to 3 down the left column of the cell, 4 to 6 down the right. You can search by character, by name or directly by dot pattern, such as 1-3-4.

The tool is honest about its limits: it performs uncontracted letter-for-letter transcription, digits are preceded by the numeric indicator as Braille convention requires, and characters without a Grade 1 cell pass through unchanged with a notice. Everything runs in your browser; your text never leaves it.

Uncontracted Braille: each print letter, digit and punctuation mark is transcribed as its own cell, one for one. Grade 2 adds hundreds of contractions and abbreviations for compactness; this tool deliberately stays with the letter-for-letter Grade 1 mapping.

A cell is a grid of six raised dot positions in two columns: dots 1, 2 and 3 run top to bottom on the left, and dots 4, 5 and 6 on the right. The letter “a” is dot 1 alone; the reference shows each character’s exact pattern.

Digits reuse the cells of the letters a through j, preceded by the numeric indicator (dots 3-4-5-6) that signals “what follows is a number”. The translator inserts this indicator automatically, exactly as Braille convention requires.

Yes. The output uses the Unicode Braille Patterns block, so it survives copy and paste into documents, chats and web pages — anywhere that renders Unicode. How it displays depends on the destination’s font support.
