About Sudoku

Sudoku is the world’s best-known logic puzzle: fill a 9×9 grid so that every row, every column and every 3×3 box contains the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. Though number-based, it needs no arithmetic — only deduction. The modern form was popularized in Japan in the 1980s, where it got its name, before conquering newspapers worldwide in the 2000s.

Here you can play sudoku online free at four difficulty levels — Easy, Medium, Hard and Expert — with a notes mode for pencil-marking candidates, a hint button that reveals the selected cell, a checker that flags mistakes and a timer that records how fast you solve. It all runs in your browser without any sign-up.

How to use Sudoku

  1. Pick a difficulty — Easy, Medium, Hard or Expert — and start a new puzzle.
  2. Tap a cell, then choose a digit from the number pad or press 1–9 on your keyboard.
  3. Remember the one rule: each row, column and 3×3 box must contain every digit from 1 to 9 exactly once.
  4. Turn on Notes to pencil in small candidate marks instead of committing to an answer.
  5. Use Check to flag mistakes or Hint to reveal the correct value of the selected cell.
  6. Fill the whole grid correctly to finish — your solve time is shown at the end.

Frequently asked questions

Scan each row, column and box for digits that can only fit in one cell, and use notes to track candidates. Well-formed puzzles, including all of these, are solvable by pure logic — guessing is never required.

Harder puzzles start with fewer given digits and demand more advanced deductions. Easy grids yield to simple scanning, while Expert puzzles require techniques like pairs and pointing candidates.

Notes let you write small candidate digits in a cell while you narrow down possibilities, just like pencil marks on paper. They are essential on Hard and Expert grids where few cells can be solved immediately.

Hints simply fill in the selected cell and Check highlights wrong entries against the solution. There is no penalty system — the mistakes counter just helps you track accuracy while the timer keeps running.

Yes. Tap a cell, then tap a digit on the on-screen number pad. The grid scales to phones and tablets, and the puzzle is free with no download.
