2048 is a sliding tile puzzle played on a 4×4 grid. Every move slides all tiles in one direction, and when two tiles with the same number collide they merge into their sum — two 2s become a 4, two 4s become an 8, and so on toward the elusive 2048 tile.

The game was created in 2014 by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli, who built it in a weekend, and it became a global phenomenon within weeks. Its rules take seconds to learn, yet reaching 2048 demands real planning, which is why it remains one of the most played browser puzzles ever.

This version lets you play 2048 online free with keyboard or swipe controls, tracks your best score, and lets you keep playing past 2048 for even larger tiles. Everything runs locally in your browser with nothing to install.

How to use 2048

1. Press an arrow key — or swipe on a touch screen — to slide every tile on the board in that direction.
2. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one tile with their combined value.
3. After each move a new tile appears, so keep space free by merging often.
4. Build up merges until you create the 2048 tile to win.
5. Choose Keep going after winning to chase a higher score, or start a new game anytime.
