About Minesweeper

Minesweeper is the classic deduction game made famous by its inclusion in Windows in the early 1990s. Hidden beneath the grid are mines; every revealed square shows how many of its eight neighbors are mined. Using those numbers, you deduce which squares are safe and which must be flagged.

This browser version offers three board sizes — a 9×9 grid with 10 mines, 13×13 with 30, and a full 16×16 expert field with 55 — and guarantees your first click is always safe. A dedicated flag mode makes marking mines easy on touch screens, so you can play minesweeper online free on desktop or mobile without installing anything.

How to use Minesweeper

  1. Choose a board size, then click or tap any cell to start — the first click is always safe.
  2. Read the numbers: each one tells you how many of the 8 surrounding cells hide a mine.
  3. Right-click a cell — or turn on Flag mode and tap — to flag a suspected mine.
  4. Use the mines-left counter to track how many mines remain unflagged.
  5. Reveal every safe cell to win; clicking a mine ends the game.

Frequently asked questions

A number counts the mines in the 8 cells touching it, including diagonals. If a “1” already touches one flagged mine, every other neighbor of that “1” must be safe to reveal.

No. The board is arranged so your opening click never hits a mine, giving you a fair starting area to reason from.

No. Flags are just a memory aid — you win the moment every safe cell is revealed, whether or not the mines are flagged. The win screen also shows your completion time.

Occasionally. Most of the board falls to logic, but some endgame patterns force a 50/50 guess. Skilled players minimize guessing by exhausting all deductions first and choosing the statistically safer cell when forced.

Toggle Flag mode on, then tap cells to place or remove flags; toggle it off to go back to revealing. The game is free and runs entirely in the browser.
