About PDF to PDF/A

PDF/A is the ISO standard (ISO 19005) for documents that must stay readable for decades: every font is embedded, colours are tied to a declared colour profile, and anything that depends on the outside world, such as scripts, encryption or links to external content, is not allowed. Courts, public administrations, universities and archives often require it.

This tool rewrites your PDF as PDF/A-1b, PDF/A-2b or PDF/A-3b with Ghostscript on our own server. Fonts are embedded, colours are converted to sRGB, the colour profile is attached as the document's output intent, and forbidden features are removed. Your pages keep the same look.

After the conversion you get a short validation summary: whether the PDF/A identification is present in the XMP metadata, whether the sRGB output intent is embedded and whether every font is embedded. It is a quick check rather than a full audit; for legal filings you can confirm the file with a dedicated validator such as veraPDF.

How to use PDF to PDF/A

  1. Drag and drop the PDF you need to archive, or click to choose it.
  2. Pick the PDF/A version: 2b is the right choice for most archives, 1b for older systems, 3b if you need attachments.
  3. Click "Convert to PDF/A".
  4. The PDF/A file downloads automatically and the validation summary appears next to it.

Frequently asked questions

Choose PDF/A-2b unless the recipient asks for something else: it is widely accepted and keeps transparency and layers. PDF/A-1b is the oldest and strictest version, for systems that only accept it. PDF/A-3b is like 2b but also allows files to be embedded inside the PDF.

Level B (basic) guarantees that the pages will look the same in the future. Levels A and U add requirements on the document structure and Unicode text that depend on how the file was authored, so they cannot be guaranteed by a conversion.

No, the pages keep their look. Colours are converted to the sRGB profile, and with PDF/A-1b transparent elements are flattened, which can change very subtle effects.

No. PDF/A does not allow encryption. Remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool, then convert the unlocked file.

The file is written as PDF/A and the summary checks the key points: identification, colour profile and fonts. Some unusual source files can still fail a strict validator; a check with veraPDF is the final word for legal use.
