About Japanese Patterns

Japan has a long tradition of repeating patterns on textiles, paper and woodwork. This collection is inspired by that heritage: seigaiha waves, asanoha hemp leaves, shippo circles, kikko tortoiseshell hexagons, uroko scales, yagasuri arrow feathers, tatewaku rising lines and kumiko lattices.

Indigo with off-white is the classic starting point for these designs, and they work just as well in a single muted color on a soft background. Many of them are line drawings, so the stroke slider changes their character from delicate to bold.

Frequently asked questions

Seigaiha means "blue ocean waves". Its overlapping arcs are traditionally linked with calm seas and good fortune.

Asanoha is a star-like geometric design named after the hemp leaf. It has often been used on clothing for children, because hemp grows quickly and straight.

They are new vector drawings based on traditional Japanese motifs, made to repeat as seamless tiles. If a project calls for historical accuracy, compare them with reference sources.
