About Islamic Geometric Patterns

Islamic art developed some of the richest geometric ornament in the world, seen on tiles, carved plaster and wooden screens from Spain to Central Asia. These designs are inspired by that tradition: khatam eight-point stars, girih, zellige, interlaced stars and Moorish arches.

Deep blues, turquoise, emerald and gold are natural choices, and a single line color on a dark background gives an elegant screen effect. They work well for invitations, posters and event pages as well as website backgrounds.

Frequently asked questions

Girih is a style of Islamic geometric decoration built from interlacing straps that form stars and polygons. It is common in Persian and Central Asian architecture.

Zellige is the Moroccan craft of setting small hand-cut glazed tiles into geometric mosaics. The designs here take inspiration from its star and polygon layouts.

Yes. Pick a star or arch design, choose your colors and download a PNG at the size you need. Exported patterns are free for personal and commercial use.
