About Tribal and Folk Patterns

Woven rugs, printed cloth and painted pottery have inspired these designs: kilim bands, mud cloth marks, Aztec steps, tribal triangles, folk rosettes, interlaced rings and the Greek key, also known as the meander.

Earth tones such as terracotta, ochre, indigo and cream suit them well, and they can also look fresh in brighter colors. Their strong rhythm makes them a good fit for borders, packaging and section backgrounds.

Frequently asked questions

Mud cloth, or bogolan, is a hand-dyed cotton fabric from Mali decorated with bold geometric marks. These designs take inspiration from that graphic style, and they are not copies of specific cloths.

The Greek key, or meander, is a continuous line that turns back on itself at right angles. It was used widely in ancient Greek art and architecture.

They are original vector drawings inspired by craft traditions from several cultures. For work that represents a particular culture, it is worth checking with people from that community.
