About Pixel Art Patterns

Hard square edges bring back the look of early computers and game consoles. This collection includes pixel sprites, dither textures, dither gradients, pixel stairs, pixel checks and pixel glyphs, all drawn on a strict grid.

Limited palettes suit this style best, so try two or three colors and pick whole-number zoom values to keep every pixel the same size. A small tile is also useful as a texture in game prototypes.

Use the SVG or CSS version, or export a PNG at a whole multiple of the tile size. A zoom of 1x, 2x or 3x keeps every pixel the same size.

Dithering mixes dots of two colors to suggest a shade in between. Older screens with few colors relied on it, and today it gives images a recognizable retro texture.
