The Wind Chill Calculator tells you how cold the air actually feels on exposed skin once the wind is factored in. Enter the air temperature and the wind speed in either metric or imperial units and it returns the wind chill temperature, how many degrees colder it feels than the thermometer reading, a risk level and an estimated frostbite time.

It uses the wind chill index adopted by the US National Weather Service and Environment Canada in 2001, which replaced the older 1945 formula. That model assumes a wind measurement at face height (about 1.5 m), no sunshine, and heat loss from bare skin — which is why it is defined only at or below 10 °C (50 °F) with wind above 4.8 km/h (3 mph).

Wind chill is how cold the air feels on exposed skin. Moving air strips away the thin layer of warmth your body holds against itself, so heat is lost faster than the thermometer temperature alone would suggest.

The NWS 2001 formula is: wind chill (°F) = 35.74 + 0.6215T − 35.75V^0.16 + 0.4275T·V^0.16, where T is the air temperature in °F and V is the wind speed in mph. This calculator converts metric inputs into those units first.

The formula is only defined at or below 10 °C (50 °F) with a wind above 4.8 km/h (3 mph). Outside that range the index is not meaningful, so the feels-like temperature is simply the air temperature.

Around a wind chill of −28 °C exposed skin can freeze in roughly 30 minutes; near −40 °C that drops to about 10 minutes, and below −48 °C to about 5 minutes. Cover every patch of skin when the calculator reports these bands.

Wind chill only describes heat loss from exposed skin, so it cannot cool an object below the actual air temperature — your pipes will not freeze faster than the thermometer allows. It does speed up how quickly warm objects, and animals, lose heat.
