Про Tire Size Calculator

The Tire Size Calculator decodes metric tire sizes like 225/45R17 and compares two of them side by side. For each size it works out the sidewall height, overall diameter, circumference and revolutions per mile and per kilometre, then reports the percentage difference in diameter and the speedometer error that difference causes.

Metric sizing is a mix of units: the first number is the section width in millimetres, the second is the aspect ratio (sidewall height as a percentage of the width), and the last is the rim diameter in inches. Overall diameter is the rim plus two sidewalls, which is why a lower profile on a bigger wheel can keep the same rolling diameter.

Use it when plus-sizing wheels, checking whether a staggered set will fit, or working out why your speedometer reads high after a tire change. As a rule of thumb, keep the diameter change within ±3% of the original. Free, instant and browser-based.

Як використовувати Tire Size Calculator

  1. Enter the width, aspect ratio and rim diameter of your current tire (for 225/45R17: 225, 45, 17).
  2. Enter the same three numbers for the tire you are considering.
  3. Read the diameter difference as a percentage — stay within about ±3%.
  4. Check the speedometer comparison to see your true speed with the new size.
  5. Review the full table for sidewall, circumference and revolutions per mile.

225 is the section width in millimetres, 45 is the aspect ratio (the sidewall is 45% of 225 mm, so about 101 mm), R means radial construction, and 17 is the rim diameter in inches.

Most manufacturers and fitters allow up to about a 3% change in overall diameter. Beyond that you risk rubbing, incorrect ABS and traction-control behaviour, and a speedometer error large enough to matter.

The speedometer counts wheel rotations. A larger tire travels farther per rotation, so your true speed is higher than the display shows — the error is proportional to the diameter difference this calculator reports.

It is how many full turns the tire makes over one mile, equal to 63,360 inches divided by the tire circumference. Manufacturers publish it because it governs speedometer, odometer and gearing behaviour.

Plus sizing means fitting a larger-diameter wheel with a lower-profile tire so the overall diameter stays roughly the same — for example moving from 225/45R17 to 245/40R18. This calculator shows how close the two actually are.
